Questions
Fees, first calls and who you work with
About the first call, how we price work and who you work with. Questions about a single stage are on that stage's page.
Getting started
How does the first call work?
It is 20 minutes, by phone or video, and free. We ask a few questions, tell you which stage the work is in, who would lead it and roughly what it costs.
Why do you ask for names before the call?
To check for conflicts. We can't advise you if we already represent the other side, and we need to know before you tell us anything about the matter.
Does the call make you my lawyers?
No. We represent you once we have both signed an engagement letter that sets out the scope and the fee.
Fees
How do your prices work?
Most Open, Expand and Exit work is a flat fee set in writing before we start. Disputes are billed by the hour against a written estimate for each step.
What isn't included in a flat fee?
State filing fees, recording fees and other third-party costs. They are listed on the quote and charged at cost.
Do you ask for a retainer?
For flat-fee work, half at signing and half on delivery. For disputes, a deposit held in a client trust account and billed against monthly.
Working together
Will I always talk to the same lawyer?
Yes. Your lead lawyer is named in the engagement letter and stays on the matter until it closes.
Do you work with companies outside Pittsburgh?
Yes, by video, for companies in the states where our lawyers are admitted. Each lawyer's page lists them.
Can you work with our accountant?
We prefer to. Entity choice, sales and succession all have tax sides, and we would rather plan them together than fix them later.
Ask it on the first call
Ask it on a free 20-minute call. We'll answer it, or tell you who can.
The first call is free. It doesn't make us your lawyers; a signed engagement letter does.
